Welcome to the Horwich and District Fly Fishing Club Website
Membership
The Club was formed in 1980 mainly due to the increasing interest in fly fishing in the local area and a number of like minded fishers wanting to get together and share their common interest. In 1983 we obtained the lease for Upper Roddlesworth, one of the Rivington chain of reservoirs and by far the most scenic. The lake is 24 acres in size and we also have regular organised trips to other waters.
Membership of the club is limited but should you wish to be considered, please contact our Membership Secretary, Freda Mercer, for details on 01254 611348. This is a fishing club where the members are actively encouraged to get together at the monthly meetings and attend the Annual Presentation Dinner, rather than merely turning up for an AGM once a year. The commitment of members to active participation in the club has taken us from strength to strength over the years.
The Lake
The lake has a good variation in the level of difficulty in casting. For novices the dam wall is very easy to fish as is most of the right hand bank. The left hand bank is more difficult to fish but the extra effort required can be rewarded with excellent fishing, as the fish are often fairly close to the shore and roll casting will cover the water adequately.
Fly life is the same as most upland reservoirs with Buzzers catching throughout the season and Daddies coming in from August onwards. We are lucky that most years we have a fairly substantial Mayfly hatch which can produce fantastic visual fishing given the right conditions. Lures can be effective at times but more and more fish are being taken on the dry fly, which must be the most satisfying and exciting way to catch trout.
Notices
We work hard to ensure that our members and anyone who wishes to purchase a day ticket has fishing which is equal to and better than most local trout fisheries.
If you do decide to visit Upper Roddlesworth we hope you enjoy your day and have success.
