The Horwich and District Fly Fishing Club was formed in 1978 by twelve members who attended a fly tying class at the Horwich College for Further Education. Since its formation, the Club has progressed very swiftly with the membership being full as early as 1984. Naturally, not all members renew their membership each year, so there are sometimes a few vacancies.
The Club meets every second Tuesday of each month at The R.M.I. Club. Chorley New Rd. Horwich, when all relevant information is given to you regarding social events, fishing trips, and what’s happening at our water. As such, it is essential that you come along to the monthly meetings and, indeed, most members treat these meetings as a night out during which they can have a drink and meet their friends.
Most importantly, in December each year, we have our main social event, which is the Annual Presentation Dinner, when all trophies for winning the Clubs fishing trips are presented.
In mentioning trophies, the Club has seven fishing trips per year which are organised as friendly competitions. Five of these are our own domestic trips, during which we visit the main waters in the country, such as, Draycote, Pitsford, Fewston, Stocks, etc. Two of these trips are also competitions against Windermere Anglers, and Oldham Fly Fishers. We also have our own Rose Bowl competition, members deciding a local venue. A coach is provided for four of the trips, subsidised by the Club, and trophies are awarded for all domestic competitions.
Our main asset, of course is our own water- Upper Roddlesworth at Abbey Village, Nr Chorley. This water is quite superb, being very generously stocked with Rainbow and Blue Trout. Additionally, we have our own boats and fishing lodge exclusively for the use of our members.
Naturally to maintain the very high standards the Club sets, it is a condition of membership that member’s bailiff on three occasions throughout the year, and should contact the police should any poaching be taking place. The above is a brief account of the Clubs activities, and, if you feel that this Club is ideal for you, and that you can participate in all the aforementioned activities, then we would be pleased to hear from you. Please pass this notice on to any interested parties.
